Glucosamine is one of the most popular nutritional supplements in the world – and for good reason. It contributes towards a better quality and more healthy cartilage. Glucosamine also keeps joints supple through better lubrication. Glucosamine is a substance that occurs naturally in the body. It is an important building block in the human body. Glucosamine is used in building and maintaining cartilage, joint casings, tendons and other connective tissues. It also contributes to maintaining joint fluid (synovia). This seems to be the most positive element of Glucosamine. Glucosamine created by the body can be supplemented by additional glucosamine in the form of a nutritional supplement.
Approximately two out of three people benefit from taking glucosamine sulphate. The effect of the supplement is generally noticed within 6 weeks, but may be noticeable even sooner, such as within a week; on the other hand, it may take up to six months for effects to be noticed. This differs for each individual. The protection provided by glucosamine lasts for some time after one stops taking it. After this period, however, the protection dwindles. Most people, therefore, take glucosamine without interruption.
Glucosamine sulphate can be combined with chondroitin sulfphate for even better physiological effect. This supplement is available as a separate product, but is often added at the Glucosamine. Chondroitin has a strong effect on its own, but it is known above all for amplifying the effect of glucosamine. The superiority of this combination is substantiated by scientific research: a major independent US GAIT study in 2005.
The dose to take is 1500 mg for the Glucosamine and 500 for the Chondroïtine. This is the right dose to make it effective. This amount should be taken every day for at least 6 weeks to get a positive result. Remind that cartilage can NEVER recover or grow in adults, although this is what a lot of the producers of these supplements say.
